Cameroon joins the International community today Wednesday to celebrate the 133rd edition of Labour Day on May 1,2019. The day is celebrated with the theme: "Workers Protection: Vector of Social Justice and Descent Work in Cameroon".
The day is celebrated every year on the 1st of May. The day has been declared a national day in about 80 countries in the world which aims at promoting and encouraging labour associations.
History holds it that the day is celebrated to commerate the 4th May of the year 1886, which is the Haymarket massacre in Chicago, USA when workers were on the general strike for their eight- hour work day. This day is celebrated to finish the struggle as to promote the requirement of eight- hours work day.
Earlier the working condition of the workers was very severe and working hours were 10 to 16 hours in unsafe conditions. Therefore, the Labour Day is celebrated yearly as an official holiday all over the world to celebrate the accomplishments of workers.
Though, other parts of Cameroon fully commerate this day, many workers in the South West and North West Regions have lost their jobs and others have even lost their lives as a result of the deepening Anglophone Crisis. Equally inhabitants remain indoors due to a 2day lockdown imposed by separatist fighters on the Regions.
