Back-to- School Fever; Cardinal Tumi and Ekindi to Hold Grand Peace Conference.

Cardinal Christain Tumi

As schools resume on September 2, 2019 nationwide, many are worried about the fate of learners in Cameroon's North West and South West Regions who have been out of school for three years.

The emeritus Archbishop of Douala, Christian Cardinal Tumi and the leader of the ProgressiveMovement, Hon. Jean-Jacques Ekindi are among those preaching the school resumption gospel in the troubled regions.

They also announced that on Thursday, August 29, 2019, they will organize a Grand Peace Conference in Douala that will pull together religious leaders from all denominations in the country, traditional authorities, political parties, leaders of civil society organisations, media professionals, commercial associations, artists and promoters of culture among others to pray for peace.

A press release on the issue clearly states that it is unacceptable for Cameroonians to be brutally deprived of their rights to earn a living and cater for themselves and their families and also that the risk of death in the North West and South West Regions become a daily or permanent affair.

“Both parties, that is the military and the separatist fighters should both drop their guns for a favourable climate for schools to resume," Ekindi said.

“There should be a call for a ceasefire, for all arms to be laid, for schools to resume. Our brothers in the villages should keep their guns for hunting,” the Cardinal added his voice to the clarion call.

The peace crusaders also said that the first set of assignment for the organisation will be to ensure that children return to school in a calm and serene environment, with their security ensured as well as make sure that economic and social activities take full gear without any risks of destruction and violence and finally contribute to efforts aimed at protecting all citizens; women, children and men who are not involved in the conflict.

  1. This humble, most amicable conference is a great step to forge ahead the pride if the sorrowful people of the Northwest and south west region of Cameroon, But my take on this lies on the fact that the conference should be held in one of these anglophone regions, thus is in a bid to show some seriousness and devotion to words bringing a successful school year 2019-2020.
I believed if such is done, it will put more fill the heart of the protesters and co, to see the worth in education. That not withstanding, I thank our Archbishop and Co, for the effort to ease the back to school fever in the prevailing wind of Cameroon
